This was shimmering red in the distance and on coming closer emerged to be an acer. Of course good for spring colour!

Sown early spring in a tray and pricked out into modules, now showing strong growth and healthy roots. This is ready to go into the garden and the light frosts lately won’t do any harm.
Time to collect leaves as a resource for potting compost next year.
I can hardly take my eyes off this one: bicolour petals – darker on the reverse, which produces kind of a magic contrast as the petals unfold. And the sunlight produces neon magenta reflections inside the flower!
Dahlias are definetely not maintenance-free. I find they do best when dug up in autumn. But they reward everyone by putting on an enormous show come summer.
